Where has the summer gone? It seems only a moment I was bringing out my balcony furniture and positioning myself for some prime David Usher spotting… Now it’s grey and raining, and my plants are all dead. Since I discovered my famous neighbour last year, spotting him has become a favourite pastime of friends and family who live in the hood. I will get updates from my aunt, who has spotted him at the local grocery store and has declared him to be “a very nice-looking young man”, to my Dad, who spotted him on the street based on a description I’d given, since, being quite ignorant of comtemporary music, had no idea who DU was. I’ve also had quite a few spottings this summer: on the street, at a local bar, at the grocery store, in front of my house chatting to a neighbour as I was walking out (prime viewing opportunity!).

Now that the leaves are changing and the temperature is dropping, spotting DU has become a rare treat, as if he were like a Canada goose having migrated South, only to return in our regions when Spring has sprung. Life will be definitely less exciting in the neighbourhood now, like at the end of an Easter Egg hunt. In the meantime I will have to be content with listening to my old Moist CD and youtubing his videos… Sigh…

Remember 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon? Well if you’re a Montrealer, chances are you probably wouldn’t be able to reach him in only 6 degrees maybe 666. But I know of a new version, MTL style: 6 degrees of David Usher!

How did this get started, you ask? I was at a family dinner party recently and happened to mention this David Usher blog of mine to a family friend. Imagine my surprise when she related that she knew David Usher’s wife, as their children go to school together and have become friends.

Me –> My aunt –> Her friend–> her kids –>David Usher’s kids–>David Usher’s wife –> David Usher

It’s official: I have 6 degrees of David Usher! I’m no longer only a slightly stir crazy blogger staring down from her balcony and scanning the streets for the former Moist front man. Dare I hope that this connection, albeit tenuous, will one day enable me to meet the man in the flesh? A girl can dream…  In the meantime just think: if I can reach DU, most of you can too!

David Usher in the Moist days

David Usher in the Moist days

How excited was I when I moved last summer and found out that one of my new neighbours was none other than David Usher! As a teen I was a big fan of Moist (loved that “Push” video!), but after their first album I must confess I lost track of them.

Then one sunny day, as I sat on my new balcony, I saw a familiar shape gently ambling down the street, pushing a baby stroller. At first I wasn’t sure- did I see what I thought I saw? Was that really David Usher? I asked my sources and found out he was indeed living in the hood. I thought seeing him might be a one off, but then I kept spotting the man, taking his kids for a walk, going to the corner pharmacy, having a drink at the local bar, etc.

I became obsessed with getting my Daily Dose of David. From a distance that is- I wouldn’t want you to think I am some sort of madly obsessed stalker! I guess I just get a kick out of having David Usher for a neighbour… So stay tuned to get your Daily Dose of David… New sightings will be posted every week!
